چکیده

Improvements in the processing speed of multipro cessors are outpacing improvements in the speed of disk hardware Parallel disk I O subsystems have been proposed as one way to close the gap between processor and disk speeds Such parallel disk systems require par allel le system software to avoid performance limiting bottlenecks We discuss cache management techniques that can be used in a parallel le system implementa tion We examine several writeback policies and give results of experiments that test their performance

Reliable Writeback for Client-side Flash Caches

Modern data centers are increasingly using shared storage solutions for ease of management. Data is cached on the client side on inexpensive and high-capacity flash devices, helping improve performance and reduce contention on the storage side. Currently, write-through caching is used because it ensures consistency and durability under client failures, but it offers poor performance for write-h...

Integrating the Spiralog File System into the OpenVMS Operating System

method that offers fast writes and a fast, on-line backup capability. The integration of the Spiralog file system into the OpenVMS operating system presented many challenges. Its programming interface and its extensive use of write-back caching were substantially different from those of the existing OpenVMS file system, known as Files-11. To encourage use of the Spiralog file system, we had to ...

Flash Caching on the Storage Client

Flash memory has recently become popular as a caching medium. Most uses to date are on the storage server side. We investigate a different structure: flash as a cache on the client side of a networked storage environment. We use trace-driven simulation to explore the design space. We consider a wide range of configurations and policies to determine the potential client-side caches might offer a...

AWOL: Adaptive Write Optimizations in Linux

Operating system memory managers fail to consider the population of read versus write pages in the buffer pool and the outstanding I/O requests when writing dirty pages to disk or network file systems. This leads to bursty I/O patterns, which stall processes reading data and reduce the efficiency of disk and file systems. We address these limitations by adaptively allocating memory between writ...

Host-side Filesystem Journaling for Durable Shared Storage

Hardware consolidation in the datacenter occasionally leads to scalability bottlenecks due to the heavy utilization of critical resources, such as the shared network bandwidth. Hostside caching on durable media is already applied at the block level in order to reduce the load of the storage backend. However, block-level caching is often criticized for added overhead, and restricted data sharing...
